Himalayas. Ridge Kanchendganga

Kanchendganga fills the frame, a long sawtooth ridge running horizon to horizon under a sky Roerich paints in flat, radiant bands of blue. The whole surface reads as cold light held in pigment. The massif rises in planes of cobalt and slate, snow lying along the crest like a hard white line. Foothills dissolve into violet shadow at the base, while the upper air glows almost turquoise, thin and luminous the way it does above five thousand meters. Tempera gives each peak a chalky, matte finish. Made for a study or a quiet hallway, it belongs where the eye can rest on stillness and altitude.
