Himalayas

A single snow peak commands the view, its white pyramid set against a sky of unbroken ultramarine. Nicholas Roerich returned to the Himalayas throughout his life, and rarely did the range stand so austere. The tempera surface sits matte and chalky, color laid in broad flat planes with almost no modeling. Cobalt pools in the couloirs and shadowed flanks; the snow reads less as white than as pale rose and violet, thinned by altitude. Nothing interrupts the emptiness below the ridge. Give it a study, a stair landing, a room where mornings begin slowly, and the cold blue keeps the air thin and clear.
