Himalayas

A mountain wall of snow holds the entire view. Nicholas Roerich painted the Himalayas again and again, and here the range sits in flat, unbroken bands of white above deepening blue shadow. The peaks carry almost no modeling, their slopes left as clean fields of pale pigment, while the valleys below sink into tempera blues that move from slate to near-violet. Thin passages of light catch the highest ridges. Nothing else enters the frame, no figure, no tree, only altitude and silence rendered in that cool, mineral palette the artist favored during his Central Asian years. It belongs in a quiet room, a study or hallway where low lamplight lets the cold blues deepen after dark.
