Himalayas

A glacier-cut valley opens beneath long ridgelines of snow in this Himalayas composition by Nicholas Roerich. Pale summits catch the light while the foreground sits in cold half-tone. The color is built from tempera-thin layers of violet, lapis, and bone white, laid in broad flat planes with almost no blending. Hard edges where ridge meets ridge give the mountains a cut-paper certainty. Above them, the sky burns toward a bruised rose near the horizon. Roerich, the Russian symbolist who crossed these ranges on foot, painted altitude as silence. A reading nook or quiet hallway suits this mood well, where the cold air of high passes can settle into a room.
