Himalayas

Himalayan summits fill the frame in Nicholas Roerich Himalayas, cold and massive, painted as ranges of blue snow pressed against an open sky. Nothing intrudes. The mountains carry the whole picture. Tempera tones build the ridges in bands of cobalt, cerulean and near-white, each slope hardened by shadow on its northern face. The foreground peak sits low and warm against the distance, a device Roerich used again and again across his Central Asian series. Snow reads as pigment, not as sparkle. A meditation corner, hallway, or high-ceilinged study gains an immediate horizon from these summits, the kind of view a mountain traveler keeps returning to.
