Himalayas

A sunlit summit rises alone above a sea of shadowed peaks. Himalayas belongs to the series Nicholas Roerich painted after years in the high ranges, where snowfields and thin air became his only subject. Tempera and wash give the snow its chalky body, laid against slopes of deep cobalt and violet. The foreground ridge falls away in cold half-tone, leaving one white crest to catch the light. Roerich paints distance itself: layer after layer of mountain fading toward a horizon of pale, glassy color. Best suited to a study or reading room, where the stillness of high altitude can hold its own.
