Himalayas

Snow rides the crests of these mountains like a second range laid over the first. Nicholas Roerich titled the work simply Himalayas, and the title does the naming for him. Tempera gives the snow its chalky body against slopes of ultramarine so saturated the shadows read blue rather than grey. The ridgeline cuts diagonally, sharp at the summit, softening into layered foothills where pale washes suggest distance and thin air. Barely any sky remains above; the peaks press upward until color runs out. A quiet room rewards this: a study, a hallway, anywhere a person pauses and looks toward the horizon.
