Himalayas

Snowbound summits rise in tiers of blue, each ridge a colder shade than the one before it. This is Nicholas Roerich at his most ascetic, reducing the Himalayas to pure geometry and atmosphere. Tempera pigment sits flat and matte on the surface, the mountain faces built from overlapping planes of cerulean, violet and near-white. Snow caps read as hard-edged wedges. Below, a strip of dark foothills anchors the composition, and the sky above holds a single unmodulated field of deep cobalt. A contemplative subject for a study, a hallway, or anywhere that calls for altitude and silence.
