Himalayas

Snowfields occupy the whole picture plane, and nothing else. In this Himalayas subject by Nicholas Roerich, ridgelines lie flattened into long bands of white and pale rose, stacked one behind another toward a cold horizon. The color carries the weight. Cobalt and ultramarine deepen in the hollows where shadow pools between slopes, while the sunlit faces stay almost bare, thin washes of tempera left open so the ground itself reads as snow. No figures, no trees, no path. Only altitude, made visible through layer after layer of pigment. A quiet study, a hallway, or a bedroom corner where silence is the point.
