Himalayas

A horizon of glacial summits spans the whole width of the image, snow caps pressed flat against a violet sky. Nicholas Roerich titled the work simply Himalayas. Roerich paints in broad, tempera-like planes of cobalt and zinc white, each ridge flattened to a single unmodulated band. The foreground rock reads in cold umber, while the highest snowfields glow almost pure ultramarine where shadow falls. Nothing is fussy. Every stroke serves the mountain. Suspended above a desk or reading chair in a study, the cold mountain light cools an entire room.
