Himalayas

Snow ridges rise in one long unbroken chain, painted by Nicholas Roerich in his Himalayas series. Cold light falls from above and the highest summits catch it first. The color is almost all temperature: ultramarine shadow pooling in the couloirs, white pressed thick along the crests, a thin band of pale sky holding the top edge. Roerich layers his tempera in flat, facets planes, so each slope reads like cut stone. Nothing softens the horizon. The range simply continues past both margins, as it does from any high pass in the actual mountains. A quiet study or stairwell gives this cold silence the wall it deserves.
