Himalayas

A pale massif dominates the frame, its summit dissolving into an expanse of unbroken sky. Nicholas Roerich titled the scene simply Himalayas, and the restraint suits it. Nothing competes with the mountain. Look closely and the ranges stack in receding bands: ice blue in the foreground, then cooler tiers of cobalt and slate, each ridge drawn with a firm, calligraphic contour. The snowfields carry thin washes of violet where shadow pools in the couloirs. Above them, the sky is applied flat and even, a luminous panel that presses the peaks forward and gives the whole composition its hushed altitude. It suits a study or a quiet hallway, anywhere a window seat faces north and the light stays cool through the afternoon.
