Himalayas

Peaks of the Himalayas rise in flat bands of blue, one ridge behind another, each paler than the last until the farthest dissolves into white sky. Nicholas Roerich painted these mountains the way pilgrims remember them, steep and unhurried. The color does the real work here. Deep indigo anchors the foreground slopes, thinning through cobalt and slate toward summits that carry only a whisper of snow. There are no trees, no figures, no roads. Just cold air, hard edges, and silence drawn in tempera-like planes that meet without shadow. The light comes from everywhere and nowhere, the way it does at altitude. A study wall, a quiet hallway, or a reading room with a north window gives this range the stillness it asks for.
