Himalayas

Snow peaks fill the frame edge to edge. In this Nicholas Roerich vision of the Himalayas, glacier white and deep blue temperature alone carry the whole composition. Tempera gives the summit ridges a chalky, bone dry surface, each contour sharpened rather than softened. Below, slopes sink into cold violet shadow while the upper air stays pale and weightless. Roerich thinned his paint so light seems to pass through the mountain itself. Hang it where quiet belongs: a study, a hallway, above a reading chair that faces the window.
