Himalayas

Snow peaks shoulder their way across the whole width of the image, their ridgelines sharpened to pale blue blades against a sky of deep, saturated cobalt. This is Himalayas, Nicholas Roerich painting the mountains he trekked for years. The ranges sit in bands of color: white summits cooled to violet in the shadowed folds, lower foothills in dry rose and ochre, a foreground of bare, dark slopes. Roerich thins his paint so the canvas grain reads through the snowfields, giving the high altitudes a chalky, mineral surface. Nothing softens the geometry. A study, a stairwell, or any quiet room with strong natural light suits these cold, clear peaks.
