Himalayas

Snow ridges climb the far edge of the picture, tier behind tier, while foothills fall away in bands of blue and violet. Roerich named the work Himalayas and gave the range the quiet monumentality of architecture. The brushwork sits flat and deliberate, tempera-like in its chalky matte finish. Cobalt shadows sharpen the peaks; the sky holds a single cold gradient with no cloud to break it. Small dark forms in the middle distance suggest a caravan or shrine, dwarfed by rock. Suited to a study or reading room where cool color and open horizon give the eye somewhere to rest.
