Himalayas

Snowfields blaze white against a sky of saturated ultramarine in Himalayas by Nicholas Roerich, a summit portrait where the mountain itself is the entire subject and cold light does the rest. The range builds in hard, stepped ridges, each plane a new temperature of blue, from pale cobalt at the snowline to violet shadow pooled in the couloirs. Tempera keeps the surface matte and chalky, dry brush dragged across the peak faces, while the sky deepens toward the top like thinning air. Hang it where mornings are quiet: a study with a north window, an entryway that needs a cold blast of altitude, or a reading nook with wool throws.
