Himalayas

Snow lies over the high Himalayas, unbroken and pale against a sky of steep tempera blue. Nicholas Roerich painted these slopes as almost silent forms, ridge after ridge dissolving into cold light. The foreground ridges carry darker bands of violet and slate, shadow catching where the land folds. Higher up the tone shifts, whiter, flatter, until the last summits barely separate from sky. The brushwork stays dry and matte, typical of Roerich tempera panels, giving every slope a mineral, stone-like texture rather than any soft atmosphere. A study or reading room with low light suits it well, where the cold blues will hold their depth on a quiet wall.
