Himalayas

Snowfields stretch across the lower third, white in places where the paint sits thick, thin at the ridgelines where blue shows through. This Himalayas composition by Nicholas Roerich keeps its summit uncluttered: one mass of ice and rock, low horizon, nothing else. Tempera gives the sky its chalky, matte quality, a milky blue that no oil glaze could quite match. The mountains themselves carry bands of violet and indigo in their shadowed flanks, while the lit faces stay cold and pale. Roerich built these Central Asian works during his years of expedition across the range, and the compression of scale here reads clearly, distance folded so the tallest peaks sit close and quiet. Suited to a study or reading room, anywhere a view of high altitude belongs on the wall.
