Himalayas

Peaks climb in tiers toward the upper edge of the composition, each ridge a band of cool color against the next. This Himalayan subject belongs to the Nicholas Roerich cycle of mountain works, where altitude itself becomes the subject. Blue dominates, deepening toward the summits. The snowfields read as flat planes of near-white, cut by shadowed ravines in violet and slate. Roerich builds the ranges from broad, tempera-like masses, letting the pigment sit opaque on the surface so each slope feels carved rather than painted. A thin ribbon of pale sky separates stone from heaven, and nothing human disturbs the scene. It suits a quiet study or a hallway where the eye wants somewhere far to travel.
