Himalayas

Snow fields of the Himalayas stretch beneath a sky of deep cobalt, the subject Nicholas Roerich returned to across decades of mountain painting. Here the range fills the composition almost entirely, ridge after ridge rendered in tempera whose chalky surface softens every edge. Glacier white presses down into valleys of violet and slate. The blue behind the summits is saturated yet flat, unmodulated, giving the peaks an unhurried, sacred weight. No figures, no trees. Only the mountain mass and the thin pale band where snow meets heaven. Suited to a study or reading room where quiet looking matters more than busy decoration, this mountain landscape rewards long, slow attention.
