Himalayas

Blue shadow lies over the Himalayas in this celebrated Roerich mountain composition, the ridgeline cutting a hard diagonal across an untouched sky. Nicholas Roerich painted these summits after years among the passes, and the memory shows in every slope. Cold ultramarine dominates, laid in broad tempera planes that flatten the snowfields into bands of pale violet and white. The foreground darkens toward near-black rock, and that steep tonal drop does the work of depth without a single drawn line. You can almost feel the thin air in the dry, matte surface. A study, a stairwell, or any quiet room with low light suits its hushed register. Hang it where morning sun will warm the blues.
