Himalayas

Ridges of blue climb toward a pale summit in Nicholas Roerich Himalayas, a landscape where mountains become something closer to architecture than geology. The range stacks in planes, each slope colder and lighter than the last. Roerich built his peaks in tempera, and the surface shows it: dry, chalky strokes of ultramarine and violet layered over rose-tinted snow, the pigment sitting opaque and matte like pressed mineral powder. Thin pale bands of mist wedge between the ridgelines. Nothing is soft focus; edges stay hard and deliberate, the way a horizon looks at extreme altitude when the air itself thins out. A work of this stillness settles naturally into a study or reading room, anywhere a window looks out on ordinary streets and a gaze wants somewhere higher to go.
