Himalayas

Blue peaks fold into each other down the whole length of the composition. Nicholas Roerich rendered the Himalayas as stacked planes of color, one range behind another until the farthest dissolves into sky. The title tells you the place; the color tells you the hour. Look closely and the ridge lines harden where they catch light, while the valleys sit in deep violet shadow. Tempera gives the surface a dry, chalky grain, so each mountain reads as pressed pigment rather than glossy oil. Snow caps carry pale strokes of almost pure white. The palette is restrained: ultramarine, indigo, a breath of rose at the horizon. A quiet study or a hallway with tall walls suits this kind of silence. Roerich painted the Himalayas again and again, and this view rewards the viewer who stands far back and then walks close.
