Himalayas

Ridges of the Himalayas climb in overlapping planes toward a pale crown of snow. Nicholas Roerich titled the scene plainly and let the peaks do the talking. Tempera-like color sits cool on the surface: distant summits near-white against deep ultramarine slopes, foreground ridges shifting into slate and violet shadow. The brushwork reads as long, confident diagonal strokes, each mountain band pressed flat against the next, compressing miles of altitude into one vertical sweep. Made for a study or a high-ceilinged hallway, where a viewer standing back gets the full effect of that ascent.
