Himalayas

Snow peaks fill the whole frame. Nicholas Roerich painted the Himalayas as bands of cold color, ridge stacked on ridge, until the mountain range reads like geology rendered as pure design. Cobalt shadows hold the valleys while the summits stay chalk white, almost unbroken, their edges softened by atmosphere rather than line. The sky above deepens from pale cyan into a hard ultramarine, and the terrain below settles into quiet planes of slate and violet. Nothing moves. The composition holds the stillness of very high altitude air, where distance compresses and every slope turns to flat, clean color. Made for a study or a quiet reading corner where a view of the highest mountains on earth can do its slow work daily.
