Himalayas

A single massif fills the whole view, its glacier face cut into sharp facets of white against a sky of dense cobalt. This is the Himalayas as Nicholas Roerich saw them on his Central Asian expeditions. Tempera-like handling keeps the snow planes crisp and unblended, each ridge a hard edge of pale violet shadow. Below, the lower slopes sink into bands of ultramarine and slate, while the crest burns faintly rose where the thin mountain air catches sun. Nothing human appears. The scale belongs entirely to rock, ice, and altitude, compressed into a composition of almost geometric severity. A study, a quiet hallway, or a reading nook with strong daylight suits this altitude well.
