Himalayas

Peaks rise in ranks of blue, one behind another, until the farthest ridgeline dissolves into sky. Nicholas Roerich built his Himalayas from exactly this kind of pressure: cold color stacked into silence. The foreground holds in deep indigo, its slopes cut by shadow that reads almost like folded cloth. Higher up the temperature lifts through cobalt and pale slate, snowfields left as bare, untouched passages of white. No figures, no paths. Only the mass of the range, compressed and patient, painted with the flat confidence of tempera on paper. A study wall, a quiet hallway, or a reading room with low light: somewhere the range can hold its stillness undisturbed.
