Himalayas

Mountains climb the entire surface, ridge behind ridge, painted in bands of deepening blue. Roerich named the work Himalayas, and the title tells you where his eyes were fixed. Tempera thinned over board gives the slopes a dry, mineral grain, the pigment sitting on top rather than sinking in. The nearest ridge reads almost white, struck by light, while each farther range cools toward violet and finally a near-black ultramarine at the summit line. No figures, no birds, no snowfall. Just altitude rendered as color. A study or stairway landing suits it well, anywhere the eye wants distance and cold, thin air at the end of a glance.
