Moonlight does the carving here. Himalayas. Moon Mountains, by Nicholas Roerich, reduces the whole range to essentials: snow ridges lit silver, deep blue shadow pooling in every valley between. Tempera laid in thin, dry veils gives the snow its chalky glow. Cobalt and violet deepen the sky, where a pale disc hangs above the col, throwing no warmth, only light. Every crest reads as one unhesitating stroke; the foreground falls away into near black. A study facing north suits it best: the cold palette holds its own under low lamplight, and the silence of those high summits carries into the room after dark.
