Himalayas. Guru Guri Dhar

Snow covers the summit of Guru Guri Dhar in a single unbroken sheet. Nicholas Roerich paints the Himalayan giant head-on, its ridgeline dissolving into pale blue air while the lower slopes hold their shadows in cold ultramarine. The brushwork is broad and dry, tempera-like in effect, letting the white of the ground glow through the mountains cold sides. Below, a dark blue valley floor reads almost black, and the sky carries that hard, thin luminosity found only at extreme altitude. Nothing decorative softens the scene. Suited to a study or hallway where a mountain panorama can command the wall in silence.
