Himalayas. Golden Clouds on a Purple Sky

Golden clouds ride a purple sky above the Himalayas, a late tempera composition by Nicholas Roerich from his mountain cycle. The title says everything the eye confirms. The peaks themselves stay pale, nearly white, scraped thin so the snowy ridgelines read as bone against the dusk. Above them the sky deepens from violet into a bruised plum, and the cloud bank burns amber along its lower edge, the gold thickest where the light is about to fail. Roerich layered his tempera in flat, unblended planes, so each color band holds its own edge and the whole summit glows without a single soft transition. Suits a study or a quiet reading nook, anywhere that gets dim by evening.
