Peaks of the Himalayas cool from rose to deep blue as the last light drains westward. Nicholas Roerich titles the scene simply Himalayas. Evening, and the title says everything the image needs. Tempera laid in broad, dry strokes builds the mountains from layers of cobalt and violet, their snowfields holding a thin seam of pale gold where the sun has gone. The valleys below sink into shadow so dark the color reads almost as indigo ink. Nothing interrupts the ridgelines. No figures, no trees, only slope after slope descending into dusk. A quiet study, a hallway lit by lamplight, a reading nook facing north: this is a work for rooms where silence is welcome.
