Himalayas. Blue Mountains

Blue mountains rise in receding ridgelines, each slope a colder shade than the one before it. Nicholas Roerich titled the work simply Himalayas. Blue mountains, and the name tells the whole story. The palette runs from deep cobalt at the crest down through violet shadow into a pale, almost milky valley floor. Tempera gives the color that dry, powdery matte surface Roerich favored, flat planes laid side by side with almost no modeling. No figures, no birds, no smoke. Just altitude and silence, pushed back ridge after ridge until the farthest peaks dissolve into sky the same color as stone. A quiet study or a hallway with good natural light suits it well.
