Hills

Rolling hills shoulder against one another across the picture plane, each swell rendered in a different temperature of green and violet. Nicholas Roerich names the work plainly: Hills. Look closely and the contours do the talking. Short rhythmic brushstrokes trace every fold of ground, warm ochre catching the light on one slope while cool blue shadow pools in the hollow below. Sky burns pale gold at the horizon, thinned almost to white at the top. The layering reads like tempera, matte and chalky, colors sitting flat against the surface rather than gleaming from it. Suited to a hallway or study where the calm cadence of land forms can hold the eye between errands.
