Hills

Hills rise in quiet succession across the picture plane, each ridge a slightly different shade of blue-green, each horizon receding into mist. Nicholas Roerich built landscapes like this the way monks build mountains, patiently and in layers. Roerich worked in tempera, and its chalky matte surface shows here in the dry brushwork along the slopes and the powdery pale sky. The foreground greens lean toward moss and malachite; the distant ridges cool into slate blue, so the eye travels upward through air that seems thin and cold. No figures interrupt the land. Only the hills, the hush, and the light. A study or reading room suits its calm. Hang it where morning light can touch those layered ridges.
