Hill Landscape

A broad hill shoulders its way across the picture plane, painted in the earthy ochres and moss greens of Istvan Nagy, the Hungarian artist who found his finest subject in the plain countryside around him. Nothing grand happens here. A slope, a sky, a scattering of trees. Look closer and the paint thickens. Short, loaded brushstrokes build the ridge in olive and raw umber, while the field below breaks into small dabs of yellow green. The sky sits thin and pale, letting the hill carry all the weight. This is plein air painting with Hungarian post impressionist muscle behind it, every stroke placed in front of the actual land. Hung well in a study or a hallway, where its low horizon and quiet greens give the eye a place to rest between tasks.
