Herringbone

Snow lies heavy on a young spruce, each whorl of branches stepping sideways like the stitch that gives the tree its name. Herringbone by Arkady Rylov keeps the forest close. Needles go nearly black where shade gathers under the boughs, while the drifts on top hold cold daylight and pool blue in every hollow. Paint sits thick, dragged in short strokes that follow the growth, so the plant reads as pattern as much as botany.
