Hermitage at the Lake

A small hermitage sits on the shore, its low walls and pitched roof reflected whole in still water. Nicholas Roerich renders the retreat in quiet tempera tones, blue and violet settling over everything. The lake surface carries the building in long, unbroken bands of pigment, while low hills behind hold a bruised twilight haze.
