Hermann at the Entrance to the Countess

Hermann stops at the threshold, one hand raised toward the door of the countess. Alexandre Benois stages the moment from Pushkin like a held breath, the visitor small against the tall panelled opening. Benois draws in fine ink line and muted watercolour wash: ochre walls, a shadowed vestibule, candlelight pooling at the floor. Crosshatching builds the gloom behind the door while the corridor stays pale and cold, all eighteenth century restraint and dread. A study wall or dim hallway suits it, anywhere a little theatrical tension belongs.
