Herd

Cattle crowd a broad meadow, dun and cream hides catching the last flat light of the day. Herd finds Valentin Serov working at his most economical: animal bulk, grass, open sky. Paint sits thick along the backs of the nearest animals, each stroke a dab of ochre or smoke grey, while the far ranks dissolve into loose hatch marks of green. Above them the sky holds almost no color, a pale wash pressed behind low cloud. In a hallway or above a farmhouse table, the muted palette quiets a room, asking nothing of the walls around it.
