Herd

Horses crowd a sunlit meadow in Herd, painted by the Russian artist Pyotr Konchalovsky. Chestnut and bay bodies press together, heads bowed low to the summer grass. Thick strokes of ochre and sap green build the field, laid on with a loaded brush so the pasture itself seems to have weight. Warm light breaks across each back while violet shadow pools beneath the bellies, and the horizon stays a narrow band of hazy blue. A dining room or country house hallway suits the mood here: broad daylight, earthy color, and the slow rhythm of grazing animals moving through the heat.
