Heligoland

Cliffs of red sandstone rise straight out of the North Sea in Heligoland, Arthur Segal build the island as stacked planes of brick red and chalk white against cold water. The composition chops the rock formations into angular facets, light breaking across each face in a different direction. Below, the sea churns in short, deliberate strokes of slate and green, while the sky holds a thin band of pale grey above it all. Segal divides the surface so the eye reads both land and water as structures, not scenery. A study wall or hallway benefits from a coastal subject with this much structural energy, especially beside plain plaster and dark wood furniture.
