Helene de Sparte Set Design

Columns painted like ribboned cane rise against a wash of violet and rose, the stage set for Helene de Sparte rendered in all its theatrical geometry. Leon Bakst built the scene from flat panels of coral, lapis and gold leaf, every line bent and elongated past architectural sense. Drapery swags across the upper register, palm fronds flare like flames at the edges, and the floor tilts toward the viewer in a shallow, deliberate curve. Between the columns, a faint horizon of sea and sky holds the composition steady. Suited to a hallway or music room where drama is welcome and walls are treated as scenery.
