Heart of the Forest

Dark cedars crowd the frame, their trunks pressing inward until only a narrow shaft of sky survives above. Heart of the Forest is Emily Carr at her most devoted, a canvas where the woods themselves become the subject and the viewer stands small among them. Look closely and the paint turns physical: greens laid on in wet, rolling strokes, moss grey dragged over ochre undergrowth, bark ridges built up thick enough to catch the light. The canopy closes overhead in sweeping verticals, while ferns and salal scatter darker notes across the forest floor. Nothing here is still; every brushline seems to grow. Suited to a study or reading nook, where its deep greens can hold a quiet wall and pull the eye inward like a trailhead.
