Heart Lady

A woman leans toward the viewer, one gloved hand pressed to a heart-shaped token at her bodice. Heart Lady comes from the pen of Raphael Kirchner, the Vienna-born illustrator whose slim beauties defined turn of the century taste. Fine linework carries the scene: hatched shading along the cheek, a curling arrangement of hair pinned high, a choker of dark beads at the throat. Kirchner balances soft washes of blush pink against crisp black contour, the kind of precision he honed drawing postcards for the Austrian market. Every fold of the bodice is drawn, not implied.
