Házak a Fák Között

Rooftops sink into a wall of summer foliage in Házak a Fák Között, Scheiber Hugó at his most observational, painting a village where the trees outnumber the houses. Gouache lays the body of the picture down in chalky greens, sap over olive, while pastel drifts across the leaf edges to soften them. Ochre walls and terracotta roofs flicker between the branches. Blue-grey shadow pools beneath the canopy, and dry crosshatching lets the paper grain show through every stroke. A reading nook or study suits this hush, the cool shade of a Hungarian afternoon carried indoors, no figure anywhere to break the quiet.
