Haystacks in the evening gathers a field of rounded stacks into one last wash of daylight, Pyotr Konchalovsky weighing each dome of dried grass against a cooling sky. Ochre and burnt gold pile up in thick oil strokes, the paint dragged and dabbed until each mound reads as built mass rather than outline. Violet shadow settles along the field edge while a narrow band of rose glows above the dark treeline.
