Haystack

A single haystack dominates the field, built in stacked strokes of ochre, tawny gold, and dry straw yellow. Valentin Serov paints it as the hero of the canvas, no figure, no fence, just the harvested land. Around it the stubble runs in short diagonal dabs, pale green fading to dusty rose where the ground catches low sun. The sky behind is brushed thin, a grey-blue wash that lets the pale priming show through and keeps the air cool. Serov, the Russian master of loose plein air handling, lets edges dissolve so the stack seems to breathe. Suited to a dining room or a farmhouse kitchen where earthy color does the talking.
