Haystack

A domed haystack swells out of a harvested field, painted by Pyotr Konchalovsky with the thick, loaded brushwork he brought to every Russian landscape he touched. Ochre and amber strokes build the mound in short directional dabs, each ridge of paint catching light the way dry straw does. Cut stubble runs toward the horizon in thin verticals while the sky above holds a pale wash of grey and blue. In a study lined with dark wood, or a dining room of linen and oak, these field tones find the right company, earth set against earth.
